How To Paint Wood?

Even though life becomes easier as the technology advances, the interest of people centres on natural objects and products. Every organic, handmade and natural thing is more precious today. One of these journeys of returning to old and natural is towards "wooden objects". It is possible to see aged-looking wooden furniture in the most stylish living rooms today. The energy added to the ambiance by wooden objects with a story and a history is quite unique. This is why wood painting courses attract a great deal of attention.

The way to reshape, transform and utilize an old wooden object is through adding it different colors and patterns. It has its own techniques. If you know the wood painting technique, you can renew your old furniture, give them a chirpy look and use them in different living spaces. If you wonder about how to paint wood, what you will need, and its techniques, here are important tips, and simple but effective techniques...

What Are Required For Painting Wood?

* Paints are at the top of the list of necessary materials for wood painting. Acrylic paint is used for painting wood. You can transform the old surface of the wood into a completely different color by using matte, shiny or metallic paint. Sand the wood surface, apply the first coat of paint and then let the paint dry before the second coat.

*Another material is sander. Before starting to paint, the surface to be painted must be smoothed by sander. You can use sponge sander for large surfaces. You can use sandpaper for the surfaces that are more difficult to reach.

* One of the must-haves for wood painting is of course brushes. You must have a number of brushes of different sizes for wood painting. As the width of the surfaces to be painted is different from each other, the sizes of the brushes must also be different.

* Varnish is also one of the most important elements in painting. After the wood painting is completed, it is necessary to use varnish to smooth the surface. Depending on your preference, you can apply a glossy or matte varnish on the painted surface. You can prefer liquid or spray varnish. Spray varnishes are more practical in use. In case of use of liquid varnish, you can apply several layers by a brush. Do not apply varnish before the painted layer on the wooden surface is completely dry.

How To Paint Wood?

Firstly, clean the surface you are going to paint. Residues such as oil, dust and dirt on the wooden surface stick on the paint and cause a rough and bumpy look. So, you need to clean the surface to be painted by a dry cloth. Then you can proceed with sanding process. The sanding process is necessary for both smoothing the surface and for the paint to stick on the surface. If the surface is varnished, use first a thick sandpaper and then a fine sandpaper to make the surface matte.

You can use wood putty for surfaces that cannot be smoothed by sandpaper. Apply the putty by a spatula and let it dry. Now comes the priming process. The priming process ensures that the paint adheres fully to the surface. You can use a gray primer when you use dark colors in wood painting, and a white primer when you use bright colors. You can prefer latex-based primer for outdoor furniture, and oil-based primer for indoor furniture. You can also prefer practical spray primers.

After all these steps for preparation, you can proceed with the painting process. You can use water-based acrylic or oil paints. A roller on wide surfaces and brushes of different sizes on narrower surfaces will be needed. You can also use the technique for giving an aged-look when painting wood. You can give an aged-look by moving the brush, dipped in paint, on the wood you paint in solid color in a single, sharp sweep, keeping it horizontal. After applying the first coat of the paint, you can use decoupage paper to get different  and beautiful designs.
