You can use wood putty for surfaces that cannot be smoothed by sandpaper. Apply the putty by a spatula and let it dry. Now comes the priming process. The priming process ensures that the paint adheres fully to the surface. You can use a gray primer when you use dark colors in wood painting, and a white primer when you use bright colors. You can prefer latex-based primer for outdoor furniture, and oil-based primer for indoor furniture. You can also prefer practical spray primers.

After all these steps for preparation, you can proceed with the painting process. You can use water-based acrylic or oil paints. You can give an aged-look by moving the brush, dipped in paint, on the wood you paint in solid color in a single, sharp sweep, keeping it horizontal.
